Meet the Russert

There's a difference between Tim Russert on Meet the Press and Tim Russert off Meet the Press. I taped an interview today for Russert's MSNBC show, and instead of a fast-paced interrogation, we had a...conversation. That's what some extra time buys you, the chance to complete thoughts and engage the other person. It's like the difference between TV and radio. You get to hear an actual back-and-forth between a guy writing about network news and someone who is a key figure in network news. When it airs, though, I'll be following Stephen Colbert on the show, so history may regard me as a mere footnote.

Ooooh, Pumpkinhead is the best.

More must-not-watch TV.

History regards you as an errata.

Russert has a reputation as a "tough interrogator" ONLY among those who spend way too much time in Washington. You know, the out of touch elite beltway types. And the only reason he has this reputation among these pundit clowns is because he repeats the most obvious and banal cliches of conventional wisdom. On those rare occasions when he's not fluffing his favored "nonpartisan" and "serious" guests and decides to go into "attack dog" mode, he simply peppers these not-so-favored guests with right wing talking point/attacks and cliches. Which all conveniently just happen to be exactly what the rest of the elite beltway pundit clowns are thinking. And they applaud his "brave and incisive questioning", mainly because it just reinforces their own insipid and clueless delusions of grandeur. And this annoying self-perpetuating circle completes itself.
